Upul was called to the bar in 1976 and later joined the Attorney General’s Department as a State Counsel in 1978. He was the first Legal Consultant to the Greater Colombo Economic Commission (GCEC) in 1978 which is now popularly known as the Board of Investment (BOI).
In addition to his practice as an Attorney-at-Law and President’s Counsel, he has enjoyed an illustrious career spanning over 45 years, where he acted as Chairman of several public and private corporations, including State Trading Tractor Corporation, Ceylon Oils and Fats Corporation and the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, which is the country’s central statutory and regulatory agency for investment.
In 1983, he was awarded the Top Young Outstanding Professional Award under the Entrepreneurship category for converting the State Trading Tractor Corporation to a profit-making venture. Thereafter, he spearheaded a consortium of investors to acquire 60% shares of the said corporation in 1992. He was appointed Managing Director/CEO of Ceylon Chocolates Ltd in 1997 and converted the same to a substantial profit centre. He was also a Director of Upali Investments Holdings Ltd (holding company of Ceylon Chocolates Ltd).
In 2013, he was elected as President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and played a pivotal role in upholding the rule of law and independence of the Judiciary. In recognition of his legal activism, he was awarded the Commonwealth Rule of Law Award in 2015 in Glasgow. He was appointed in January 2015 as the Chairman of the Board of Investment, the position of which he held till July 2017.
He has also served as an Executive Committee Member and Vice President of Law Asia.
Inpa Kanagaratnam is a Senior Consultant for Ironwood Legal Solutions. He has several years of experience in the legal field in both litigation and adjudication across multiple jurisdictions including Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom.
His experience in law practice spans employment law, civil law and immigration law as well as Human Rights Law. He has also covered numerous cases regarding the European Convention of Human Rights.
He began his legal career in Sri Lanka as a State Counsel at the Attorney General’s Department. Later, he was made an Assistant Secretary of the Employers Federation of Ceylon.
He acted as the Senior Counsel to the Seychelles’ government where he represented both government and semi-government entities in court. Thereafter, he was seconded as an advisor to the Minister for Trade and Manpower whilst in Seychelles.
He has extensive experience in Arbitration and the British judiciary. He is a qualified Fellow of the Institute of the Arbitrators in Singapore and has arbitrated in the London Court of International Arbitration, as well as in Seychelles covering commercial disputes.
In London, he served for 17 years as a judge specialising in Human Rights and Immigration courts, having been appointed by the Lord Chancellor of England and Wales.
He holds an MBA in Law and Management and is a Barrister in Australia, a Solicitor in England and Wales and an Attorney-at-Law in Sri Lanka.
Kalana is well versed in all areas of corporate transactional law and commercial law.
His academic and professional qualifications and accolades encompass an LLB (Hons.) from the University of London and an LLM from the University of Sydney. He was called to the Bar as an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in 2010.
His wide spanning expertise extends to investment structuring, public private partnerships, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, restructuring of companies, and litigation.
Kalana’s specialty lies in taking a practical approach to safeguarding the interests of his clientele.
Erandi’s wide spanning expertise includes cross border transactions, amalgamations, drafting mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, corporate restructuring, reviewing commercial documents, consulting on foreign investments and doing business in Sri Lanka. She also possesses ample experience in conducting secretarial and legal due diligences on target companies before a merger or acquisition.
She possesses a Bachelor of Law from the University of London (Second Upper) and a Master of Law from the University of Melbourne. She was called to the Bar in 2014.
Her specialty lies in advising and acting for an array of clients in non-renewable energy, telecommunication companies, banks and other financial institutions, education providers and other local and international firms.
Shanil manages the Australian arm of Ironwood Legal, located in Cremorne, Melbourne, Australia. In his career, he has worked across a variety of leadership roles within ASX listed businesses in the Accounting and FinTech space, bringing with him to Ironwood an abundance of experience across the wider business landscape in Australia. Shanil is also a Director of Swivel Group and their subsidiaries, working with multiple household names and brands in Australia. Shanil is a member of CPA Australia and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from Monash University, Melbourne.
Ishani has over a decade of experience in the legal process outsourcing industry, dealing with clients in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe and Australia. She has an LL.B. from York University in Canada and an LLM from Columbia University in New York, USA and a B.A. in International Studies and Economics. She specialises in commercial transactional and intellectual property work. Ishani is currently tasked with designing and implementing systems and solutions to ensure the highest levels of productivity and service and that we are constantly evolving and growing to meet the needs of our clients.
